College Women’s Lacrosse: Young Cancer Survivor Jaclyn Murphy And Adopted Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Team “Sisters” Share Courageous Story On HBO’s “Real Sports” With Bryant Gumbel

Jacklyn Murphy was adopted by the Northwestern women's lacrosse team - giving her additional strength to get through each day. Her story inspired the Northwestern program, which just won a fifth consecutive national title.

Jaclyn Murphy was adopted by the Northwestern women's lacrosse team - giving her additional strength to get through each day. Her story inspired the Northwestern program, which just won a fifth consecutive national title.

Jaclyn Murphy’s story will be told to a national audience again.

Murphy and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation will be one of the featured stories at 10 p.m. tonight on “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” on HBO.

Last month, the Arlington High School girls’ lacrosse player was featured on ABC’s “Above and Beyond”.

Murphy was nine when she was diagnosed with a malignant pediatric brain tumor. Murphy had surgery to remove the tumor and underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

As she was going through her treatments, Murphy was adopted by the Northwestern women’s lacrosse team – giving her additional strength to get through each day. Her story inspired the Northwestern program, which just won a fifth consecutive national title.

“They’ve meant the world to me,” Murphy said in her HBO interview with veteran journalist Frank Deford. “They’re like my second family.”

When Murphy was in the hospital for treatment, her roommate asked her who kept calling her. The calls were from members of the Northwestern team.

This eventually led to the start of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Through the work of the Murphy family and their friends, the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation was started where now over 100 college teams have adopted young children with a pediatric brain tumor.

As a cancer survivor now, Murphy said in the HBO interview she’s eagerly looking forward to what’s ahead – continuing her high school lacrosse career at Arlington and hopefully one day attending Northwestern.

When should I send my recruiting  DVD?

I suggest prospects begin sending DVD’s to college coaches after the completion of the sophomore year in high school.

 Should I send updates?

Yes. Athletes will move to new and higher levels of skill acquisition between the end of the sophomore year and the end of the junior year. Your post junior year DVD updates will most likely be your final video sent to the college coaches, so please keep this in mind and make it count!
