Team USA Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Ireland 22-5 In 2009 World Cup Lacrosse World Cup Quarterfinal Game


wordcup09bannerThe United States raced to a commanding 22-5 victory over Ireland in today’s Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup quarterfinal game. Player of the Match Caroline Cryer (Centennial, Colo./Duke ’09) had four goals, three assists and five draw controls. The game marked the first time that the U.S. and Ireland have met in international team usa womens lacrossecompetition. 

The Irish gave the Americans a brief scare when they took a 4-3 lead early in the first half on Krista Pellizzi’s (N. Massapequa, N.Y./Maryland ’07) goal. After a timeout, Team USA stormed back with 15 unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Ten U.S. players put points on the board for the win. Lindsey Munday (2g, 6a) ( Mountain Lakes , N.J./Northwestern ’06) and Katie Rowan (3g, 5a) (Delmar, N.Y./Syracuse ’09) led all scorers with eight points each. Attacker Whitney Douthett ( Newtown , Pa. / Dartmouth ’07) broke out with a four-goal performance. Goalie Devon Wills (3 saves) ( Denver , Colo. / Dartmouth ’06) anchored the U.S. defensively, and the Americans dominated the draw with a 20-9 advantage.

 Irish goalie Alex Kahoe ( Villanova , Pa. / Maryland ’00) made 11 stops. Lauren Cohen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Maryland ’08) led Ireland with three goals.

 Team USA (5-0) now advances to the semifinals tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. EST (2:30 p.m. Prague time). They will play the winner of the England-Japan game, which began today at 11:15 a.m. EST.
