In the boys’ Orange County championship game, top-seeded Corona del Mar (19-1) will play second-seeded Foothill (17-5), the two-time defending champion, at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Irvine High.

The winner will play the winner of the Los Angeles County boys’ title game between Loyola (15-0) and Mira Costa (13-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mira Costa.

The unofficial boys’ Southern Section championship will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Mira Costa.

Top-seeded Corona del Mar will be out to dethrone two-time county and Southern Section champion Foothill on Tuesday night when the two boys lacrosse teams meet in the U.S. Lacrosse-Southern Section Orange County Championship at Irvine Stadium.

The match starts at 8 p.m. and follows the girls final between Los Alamitos and Foothill that starts at 6 p.m.

Foothill coach Jon Fox described his team as the underdog going into the tournament. But No-2 seeded Foothill (18-5) has responded. The Knights advanced to the finals by defeating Los Alamitos, 14-12, on Saturday in the semifinals.

“I am so proud of our team,” Fox said. “To get to the championship having only one starter returning from last year is a tribute to the hard work the players and coaches have put in this season. The game key is for us to be on offense the most. We need to win the face-offs and ground ball battles to accomplish that. Both teams have offenses that can score so we want more chances than them.”

Corona del Mar (20-1) advanced by defeating Santa Margarita, 16-7, in the semifinals.

“They have an edge in the goal with four-year varsity starter (Andrew) Noto, so we will need to shoot very well, and need to stay out of penalty box,” Fox said. “If we do those things we will win.”

Corona del Mar coach Mark Todd knows his squad will be tested. The Sea Kings defeated the Knights, 7-6, on March 11.

“Foothill is a tremendous lacrosse program,” Todd said. “They’ve been at it longer than anyone in the county and have come to expect championships from their lacrosse team.

“Prior to and ever since the CIF sanctioned lacrosse as a varsity sport in the Southern Section Foothill has been repeatedly the reigning champions. They have a ton of talent at every position; and we have only beat them once, by one goal, and it took an overtime period to do it. They’re ready for us.

“We’ve seen them scouting us since then in anticipation of this match-up and it will take a tremendous team effort on our part to win again; particularly since we are a bit banged up, which is about as well as can be expected this late into the season.

“Due to various nagging injuries to a few senior starters since that game on March 11th, we are playing several positions by committee and are now relying on some of our younger guys to step up and make plays for us and so far they have responded.”

CIF-Southern Section Lacrosse Championship: Cate School Girls Lacrosse Advances To Title Game To Face Winner Of Los Alamitos Vs. Foothill-Santa Ana Game Tonight

CIF Southern SectionCate has advanced to the unofficial Southern Section girls’ lacrosse championship game at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mira Costa against either Los Alamitos or Foothill after defeating La Canada and Redondo last weekend.

The Redondo girls lacrosse team lost just its second game, but that was enough to end the Sea Hawks’ dream of a berth in the L.A./Orange County title game Saturday.

Redondo (16-2) got goals from five different players in an 8-4 victory against Thacher of Ojai in its semifinal game, but ran into an experienced squad in an 18-6 loss to Cate in the L.A. County final.

Meesha Robinson and Julia Denney combined for 10 goals in the two games (five each) to pace the Sea Hawks.

Tori Thompson had nine goals and five assists combined for Cate in the two victories.

Top-seeded Los Alamitos (17-0) will play third-seeded Foothill (15-6-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Irvine High in the Orange County championship for the right to advance to play Cate.

No. 1 seed Los Alamitos will try to win its first county title when it faces No. 3 Foothill in the U.S. Lacrosse-Southern Section Orange County Girls Lacrosse Championship on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Irvine High.

Los Alamitos (17-0) reached the county final by defeating El Toro, 12-9, on Saturday at St. Margaret’s.

Foothill moved on when No. 2 seed Beckman was forced to forfeit its semifinal match with the Knights because it had reached the 20-game maximum allowed by CIF. (Every tournament, regardless of the number of games actually played, counts as two games toward the limit.)

“It is very unfortunate that a program would need to withdraw because what one would consider a technicality,” Foothill coach Brian Cross said. “The players should not be punished for an unintended administrative error.”

Beckman’s girls lacrosse program and possibly other sports teams at the school would have been subject to sanctions from the CIF if it continued to participate in the tournament, according to Thom Simmons, director of communications for the CIF.

“We were just trying to do the right thing,” said Dan Perry, chairman of the postseason tournament, of the decision to ask Beckman to withdraw.

While followers of the Beckman program have expressed their displeasure at the ruling, Perry said there were no formal protests filed by the school.

Los Alamitos, which has lost the last two years in the county finals, will be trying to reach the Southern California finals, to be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach.

The Griffins faced Foothil (18-6-1) during the regular season and won, 15-10, in a nonleague match on March 4.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to play them again,” Los Alamitos coach Meredith Adamicki-Meyran said. “We met them earlier in the season and we know it’s going to be a close game. We’ve got to prepare and get ready and just give it everything we’ve got.”

Foothill (11-3 in regular season, 18-6-1 including tournaments) is led by midfielder Jacqueline Paquette and attack player Natalie Cross. Both players have 76 points this year.

“Los Al is a well coached team,” Cross said. “Defense is the key component in this game. We will have to match their speed.”

Tickets are $5. Students 13-and-under will be admitted free of charge.

Cal State Fullerton Men’s Lacrosse Arrives In Denver For MCLA Division II National Lacrosse Championships And Game Against Emery University

A season of blood and sweat has paid off for the Cal State Fullerton men's lacrosse club as they practiced yesterday in Denver, Colorado for the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division II National Championships, which begins today.

A season of blood and sweat has paid off for the Cal State Fullerton men's lacrosse club as they practiced yesterday in Denver, Colorado for the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division II National Championships, which begins today.

A season of blood and sweat has paid off for the Cal State Fullerton men’s lacrosse club as they practiced yesterday in Denver, Colorado for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division II National Championships, which begins today.

“We’re so excited to be representing Cal State Fullerton at a national level,” senior adviser and long-stick midfielder Rick Martinez said.

The No. 8 lacrosse club won the right to go to nationals after defeating UC Irvine 16-6 at Titan Stadium and taking down Long Beach State 10-7 at Coronado High School in San Diego during the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference playoffs.

The team’s first challenge on their way to the MLCA championship game will be the No. 4 Emery University from Atlanta.

“We’ve got to win four in a row and we have to play every game like it’s our last to win,” defenseman Warren Lee said.

One challenge the club faces is that the Eagles, as well as many other teams at the tournament, have a much larger squad than the Titans. The Titans only have a 20-man squad, whereas most other teams have around 40 players to choose from.

However, Lee said the Titans are planning on sticking to the game plan that has brought them success during the season.

“We’re keeping it the same with our run and gun strategy,” defenseman Deron Hansen said.

Fellow defenseman Greg Koehler echoed Hasen’s confidence in the team’s stategy.

“The name of the game is speed at this point,” Koehler said. “If they can’t catch us, they can’t stop us from scoring.”

Although Hansen said the team was a little concerned about the altitude in Denver, he said the team feels better after getting to practice on the field for a couple hours yesterday.

The club has strengthened its bond over the season with having to travel to play tough teams, Hansen said it has brought them closer together. Earlier in the season the club took a 15-hour drive and spent five days together in Oregon.

“The road trips are the biggest bonding experiences,” Hansen said.

Bonding and staying dedicated throughout the season made the Titans a tight-knit team and brought them to the level they are now. They finished their impressive season going 6-1 in the SLC and 13-3 overall.

“It’s amazing to be here in Colorado,” Lee said. “It makes all the had work worth it.”

Just being in Denver has already caused the team to feel a sense of accomplishment, but all the guys said they are ready for the tough competition ahead.

“We’re pretty excited,” Koehler said. “We had high hopes for the season … and we’re excited to play our first game.”

Northern California High School Boys Lacrosse: Peninsula Athletic League And West Bay Athletic League Playoffs Begin

Menlo-Atherton Boys Lacrosse vs Menlo 2009

Menlo-Atherton Boys Lacrosse vs Menlo 2009

The Peninsula Athletic League playoffs got under way Monday with host Menlo-Atherton advancing with a 9-6 victory over Mountain View. The match pitted the league’s No. 3 finisher (M-A) against the No. 6-seeded Spartans.

The Bears fought off an early challenge to take a 6-3 halftime lead. Senior David McLaughlin led Menlo-Atherton with five goals while Charlie Fitz added three and Zander Rohn one.

Goalie Kevin Sheridan had seven saves. Menlo-Atherton is next slated to face No. 2 seed Menlo on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., on the Knights’ field.

The new and expanded girls’ lacrosse playoffs get under way in the West Bay Athletic League with Gunn, Palo Alto and Sacred Heart Prep all playing first-round matches on Tuesday.

Palo Alto shared the WBAL Skyline Division title with Burlingame, both with 11-1 records. The Vikings (16-2 overall), however got the No. 2 seed in the division after losing to Burlingame during the regular season. That puts Paly into an opening-round game at rival Gunn (6-6, 9-11) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Gunn finished tied with SHP for third place but lost a coin flip and received the No. 4 seed from the Foothill Division while Sacred Heart Prep got the No. 3 seed. The Gators (6-6, 9-10) will host Burlingame on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Palo Alto already has beaten Gunn twice this season.

The SHP-Burlingame winner will visit Foothill Division champion Menlo (12-0, 15-5) on Thursday in one semifinal at 4 p.m. The Gunn-Paly winner will face host Menlo-Atherton (9-3, 12-6), the Foothill Division runnerup, also at 4 p.m.

The PAL playoff championship match will be played Saturday. Menlo is the defending champion, posting a victory over M-A in the 2008 title match.

Menlo is coming off a 20-10 nonleague loss to St. Ignatius on Saturday.
