This is an update from my previous e-mail. Lax In LA’s Kate Marks and I are the chairpersons for the newest addition to the world renowned L.A. Watts Summer Games… lacrosse!

The Games were started in 1968 as a response to the 1965 Watts Riots and consists of 17 boys and girls athletic events.

The LAWSG mission (very similar to Lax In LA’s) is to build bridges of understanding among high school youth. The games strive to promote positive interaction, respect and achievement through spirited competition in athletics and arts.

Participation at the games is expected to exceed 7000 students this summer (more competitors than the Olympics!). The LAWSG is the largest high school athletics competition in the country.

The 2009 L.A. Watts Summer Games will take place on June 13-14 and 20-21 at the Home Depot Center, USC Galen Center, Los Angeles-Southwest College and several area high schools.

For lacrosse, the games will occur on the campus of Los Angeles-Southwest College. The plan for the boys’ side this year is to have a 16 team tournament, with a guaranteed 2 games per team. Currently registered boys’ teams are: Culver City, Palisades, Harvard-Westlake, Manual Arts and Huntington Park. We are open to out of state teams as well.

This tourney is fully cleared by the Southern and Los Angeles City Section CIF. Due to the tournament being in the summer period, CIF and Club teams may play each other! This is a great chance to play a few more games as a team after the end of your season.

Pricing per team is $150.

California High School Boys Lacrosse Profile: Denison University Men’s Lacrosse Attacker Cory Couture (Coronado HS, San Diego) Scores Goal In NCAA Division III Tournament

Another quick start by the Big Red offense combined with a dazzling 14-save performance by Denison first-year goalie Gregg Shannon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Saint Anthony’s) led Denison to a 14-7 victory over third-ranked Roanoke in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship from Salem, Va.

Denison will advance to Wednesday’s NCAA Quarterfinal round against Gettysburg College.  The Bullets knocked off Washington & Lee, 15-10, in today’s second round to set up a rematch of last year’s 9-8 overtime NCAA playoff thriller that was won by Gettysburg.  This is the third appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals for Denison and their first trip to the round of eight since 2001.

In a game that pitted the nation’s second-ranked defense (Denison) against Division III’s top-scoring offense (Roanoke) at almost 20 goals per game, the Denison defense proved a force to be reckoned with down the tournament trail.

Shannon posted four of his biggest saves in the first quarter and Denison scored the first four goals of the contest sending a message to the home crowd.  After Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) gave DU a 4-0 lead off a rebounded shot, Roanoke countered with two goals to cut the lead to 4-2.

That would spark a 6-0 run by Denison that would last from 12:25 in the second quarter until 9:32 was left in the third quarter.  During that run, DU got extra-man goals from Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./The Haverford School) and Cory Couture (San Diego, Calif./Coronado).  Jones netted his third of four goals on the day

Best Of NCAA Division I Lacrosse Tournament (Video): Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Brown 12-11 In Overtime

Riveting game played at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University on Sat., May 9. First Round Men’s NCAA Tournament action between Brown University Bears and Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays.

Brian Christopher scored 36 seconds into overtime yesterday in Baltimore to give eighth-seeded Johns Hopkins a 12-11 win over Brown in the first round of the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament.

The Jays (10-4) advanced to next Sunday’s game in Annapolis, Md., against the winner of today’s game between unseeded Villanova (11-5) and top-seeded Virginia (13-2).

Western College Men’s Lacrosse (Video): Simon Fraser Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Oregon 11-7 To Win PNCLL Championship

PNCLL Championshiip pits the Oregon Ducks and Simon Fraser in an exciting game. Simon Fraser leads early and the Oregon then scores 4 goals in 5 minutes to tie in the 4th quarter. SFU goes on to win 11 to 7. Both teams go onto the MCLA championship tournament in Denver.
