Orange County High School Lacrosse: Dana Hills Boys Lacrosse In First Year Of CIF Status Off To 3-0 Start; Dana Hills Girls Lacrosse Much Improved In 2009

danahillshighschool-lacrosseThe Dolphins are off to a 3-0 start this year on the heels of a 4-9 campaign last year, its first as a CIF sport. Coach AJ Leahy returns a cast of veteran players, led by senior attackmen Ethan Heine and Colin McLaughlan. Already the two have combined for 19 goals this year. Goalie Ryan Tuley anchors the defense along with defensemen and ground ball machines Ryan Shimizu and Rory Weinell. Cole Altuzarra and Jonathan Garcia provide speed and balance at midfield.

“I’d be really pleased with a 10- to 12-win season,” said Leahy, who has 17 games scheduled this year. “We have good athletes, and our stick skills are improving.”

Leahy hopes to fare well in league play, with Mission Viejo standing out above Dana, San Clemente and Capo Valley.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Coach Mike Weinell’s second-year squad returns 18 members from last year’s 4-9-1 team. His daughter, Meggan, is a senior and was voted the team’s MVP last year after leading in scoring. She’s joined by junior midfielder Jordyn Bonanni, sophomore Ruth Frey and attacker Hayley Therrien as the team’s top returnees.

Still awaiting CIF status, the team has high hopes this spring. “They’re 20 times better than they were a year ago,” said Weinell, who had 37 girls come out for the varsity and junior varsity teams this year. “I’m very optimistic.”

College Lacrosse Recruiting: Do “Lacrosse” Athletes Qualify For Stronger Aid Packages? (Victory Collegiate Consulting)

victorycollegiateconsulting12
Do athletes qualify for stronger aid packages?

Financial aid, for the most part is “need blind” and athletes should be treated “fair and square” across the board when being evaluated. There are exceptions though and “grey areas” in financial aid packaging that could help college coaches “sweeten the pot” for prospects and their families. Speaking candidly with the college coach about the availability of possible “leadership” grants is recommended, but these requests are typically should come from families whose children are considered very strong candidates.

The Windsor High School lacrosse team staged a thrilling performance in its home debut and moved to 2-0 on the season by thumping Class 4A Thompson Valley 14-4 on Wednesday night.

From the opening whistle, Windsor was out to run, out to hit, and out to settle an old score.

“Like I said, this was payback,” Windsor lacrosse coach Steve Karsten said. “They beat us by one point in Denver last year. The boys wanted this one. You could tell … lots of hitting going on out there tonight.”

Lots of hitting, lots of goals.

Windsor scored five times in the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead on the Eagles. Senior midfielder Clay Haverty got the Wizards going just seconds into the game when he scored on a feed from attacker Garrett Scallon.

The Eagles came off a timeout, down 4-1, and got some offensive pressure on Windsor goal keeper Steve Karsten Jr.

Haverty would drop back, though, to end the Thompson Valley threat and punctuate the aggressive start for Windsor.

With the Eagles holding possession in the Windsor goal area for nearly a minute, Haverty tracked the ball and laid the check of the game on Thompson Valley attacker Seth Monholand.

Haverty’s hit dislodged the ball, and all the Eagles’ momentum seemed to go with it.

Minutes later, senior Joel Bork scored the first of his three goals to keep the Wizards in control.

Thompson Valley answered back in the second quarter with a goal by Trevor Pearman, who was left alone in front of Karsten. That goal cut Windsor’s lead to 6-3, but the Wizards would go on a game-changing run from there.

Windsor scored the next four goals to build a commanding lead. Scallon, who had two of those four goals, said the checking opened up more chances on offense.

“We put pressure on their defense. We got in their face and knocked them down,” said Scallon, who finished with four goals. “It added up. They didn’t want to (square up) and make passes up field.”

Windsor got sloppy on defense to open the fourth quarter, and Thompson Valley mustered one more goal while on the 6-on-3 attack advantage.
