San Diego Girls Lacrosse Recruiting Profile: Scripps Ranch Attacker Gina Holslag Will Be Attending Cal Berkeley After 2009 Season

Scripps Ranch will rely on Holslag’s offensive prowess once again as the Falcons try to push past the first round of the postseason, where they were eliminated last year by Francis Parker 12-10.

Season outlook: Two-time defending champion La Costa Canyon returns several key components from last year’s team, including Candelaria, who is headed to Stanford. Coronado extended the Mavericks in last year’s title game. Torrey Pines continues to improve and is becoming a legitimate threat. Rancho Bernardo is a program on the rise.

San Diego Boys Lacrosse Recruiting Profile: La Costa Canyon Long-Pole Midfielder Spencer Peterson Will Be Going To Duke After 2009 Season


The long-stick midfielder only had three points last season (two goals and an assist), but he's not asked to score. Peterson scooped up 101 ground balls and helped guide the Mavericks to the section championship.

Yes, that Duke. After this season, La Costa Canyon senior Spencer Peterson is off to play for the Blue Devils, one of the premier college lacrosse programs in the country, which makes Peterson one of the premier players in the San Diego Section.

 Season outlook: 

Can anyone crack the big four? La Costa Canyon, Torrey Pines, Poway and Coronado have traditionally been the section’s best, and all return outstanding talent. LCC, last year’s champ, has been to the title game the past six years. Bishop’s and Santa Fe Christian have programs on the rise.

Cal Berkeley Women’s Lacrosse To Play William and Mary Wednesday Night Followed By Vermont Saturday Night


California (4-3, 2-0 MPSF) continues its homestand with a pair of nonconference games this week. calberkeleywomenslacrosse2The Golden Bears take on William and Mary at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, and then play Vermont for the first time at noon on Saturday, March 14, at Memorial Stadium. Cal has a 1-2 record in the all-time series with William and Mary.

Almost half way through the season, Cal currently has the second-best record in the MPSF to Stanford, which is 4-0 in conference and 6-2 overall.

Price is Right for Bears
Cal senior attacker Sam Price leads the team in points (18), goals (13, tied with junior midfielder Alex Morgan) and assists (5, tied with junior midfielder Alyse Kennedy). Morgan ranks second in points (13). Bears senior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson lowered her goals-against average to 9.19 after Cal defeated UC Davis, 13-6, on March 8 in Berkeley.

Senior midfielder Elizabeth T Jahp has a Cal-high nine ground balls and junior midfielder Alyse Kennedy paces the Bears in draw controls with nine.

Tickner Earns Second Straight MPSF Player of the Week Honor
Tickner’s two MPSF accolades give Cal three for the season. Bears senior attacker Sam Price earned the conference nod after scoring a career-high seven points in the season-opening 19-0 win over Fresno State on Feb. 7.
Scouting William and Mary

Senior midfielder Clare Dennis (12 goals, 1 assist), who scored one goal against the Cardinal, is tied with junior attacker Mary Zulty (11 goals, 2 assists) as William and Mary’s leading scorer; each has 13 points. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Geary, who made seven saves in almost 49 minutes against Stanford, has a 12.58 GAA in five starts.

Christine Halfpenny, the 2008 Colonial Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, is in her third year as William and Mary’s head coach.

Scouting Vermont

Vermont’s top two scorers are freshman midfielder Allison Pfohl (17 points from 14 goals, 3 assists) and senior midfielder Kristen Millar (16 points from 9 goals, 7 assists). Freshman goalie Olivia Hatfield has an 11.14 GAA in five starts.

Jen Johnson is in her fifth year as Vermont’s head coach. One of her assistant coaches is former Cal assistant Jen Nardi.

Next Week

Cal hits the road to play Notre Dame at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 22, in Sound Bend, Ind.
The Catamounts have a 2-3 record prior to their Wednesday, March 11, game at UC Davis. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Their last game was a 10-6 loss against Oregon, another MPSF team, on March 8 in Eugene, Ore.
The Tribe has a 2-3 record after losing at Stanford, 18-9, on March 8. Sophomore midfielder Grace Golden led the Tribe with three goals, one assist and two draw controls.
California junior midfielder Alex Tickner earned her second consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week honor, the conference announced on Monday. Tickner scored a career high five goals and five points in the Golden Bears’ 13-6 MPSF win over UC Davis on March 8 at Memorial Stadium. The Rockville, Md., product garnered the same honor last week after scoring a hat trick in Cal’s 8-6 victory over Temple on March 1.
