University Of Oregon Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Vermont 10-6

Senior goalie Anna Poponyak finished with 12 assists, and Oregon scored four unanswered goals in oregonwomenslacrosse1the second half to defeat Vermont 10-6 in a nonconference women’s lacrosse game at Papé Field on Sunday afternoon.

Catherine Davidson had two goals and an assist, and Jana Drummond also scored twice for the Ducks (4-2), who pulled away from a 4-4 tie at the break thanks in part to two quick goals just after halftime.

Alicia Burkhart and Ilsa van den Berg scored early in the second half to give Oregon the momentum and a 6-4 lead. Burkhart won the draw to start the half, raced downfield and scored with just eight seconds gone on the clock, and van den Berg converted a pass from Jess Drummond at the 29:10 mark.

The Ducks went up 8-4 after goals by Davidson and Bina Barrett and never looked back, outshooting the Catamounts (2-3) 19-12 in the second half and converting on both of their free-position shots in the half.

Poponyak made six saves in each half to earn her fourth win of the season, and the UO defense held Vermont scoreless on all eight of its free-position shots.

“I’m proud our defense stayed hot and fresh,” UO coach Jen Larsen said, “but when you have Poponyak making those saves, it really fires everyone up.”

Cal Berkeley Men’s Lacrosse Defeats #23 Santa Clara 10-9 T0 Remain Undefeated At 7-0

Senior attackman David Parker scored four goals, including the go-ahead strike with four minutes calberkeleymenslacrosseremaining, to lead No. 14 California to a 10-9 victory over No. 23 Santa Clara in an MCLA Division I game Friday night.

Parker added an assist to finish with a team-high five points, as the Golden Bears (7-0) continued their unbeaten run under first-year head coach Dan Nourse.

Senior middie Connor Dibble scored three goals, freshman middie Dorian Farhang had a pair and sophomore middie Jared Brett rounded out the scoring with a goal for California, which won its second straight one-goal game. Last week, California edges Sonoma State in the final minute.

Santa Clara fell to 5-2 and had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Santa Clara led 7-4 in the third quarter before California answered with a five-goal run to take the lead. Farhang capped the rally when he scored with 7:10 to play in regulation to put the Golden Bears ahead, 9-7.

The Broncos fought back and evened the game at 9-9, but the tie only lasted 24 seconds. Parker scored his fourth goal precisely at the four-minute mark to put California ahead to stay.

Santa Clara had possession in the California end for the final 90 seconds, but it couldn’t get the equalizer. The Broncos even drew a penalty with 20 seconds remaining, but they never got a man-up opportunity because time expired with the ball in their possession.

It’s been a stellar start to the season so far for the Golden Bears, who finished a respectable 10-6 last season but were 4-3 at this time last year.

“They decided to take conditioning seriously,” Nourse said of his players. “As a team, we’re 10 to 15 pounds heavier, so the team is very fast and in excellent condition. That’s why we’ve been able to make the runs later in the games.”

The Recruiting Corner

1) What is the general intent of NCAA rules?

The NCAA rules are designed for 2 purposes:

  • Firstly, they create specific guidelines that college coaches are expected to follow to the letter in an effort to foster respect for the prospects and their families that will provide them with some “breathing room” during a very important life decision.
  • Second, these rules are designed to educate families, prospects and high school coaches in proper procedures and guidelines that will assist them in navigating a successful college search. Visit http://www.ncaa.org and you will be well on your way!

Cal Berkeley Women’s Lacrosse Defeats UC Davis 13-6 And Improves Their 2009 Record To 8-1

goals to help California ride an 8-1 start into a 13-6 win over UC Davis in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse action at Memorial Stadium Sunday.

The Aggies dip to 2-3 overall and in conference play. The Golden Bears improve to 4-3 for the season and 2-0 in MPSF games.

Sophomore Christina Corsa had two goals and an assist to lead UC Davis offensively. She also picked up two ground balls and won a pair of draw controls. Sophomore Gina Hoffmire added two goals for the Aggies, while juniors Molly Peterson and Britt Farquharson each had one.

For Cal, Tighe Hutchins and Sam Price each recorded two goals and one assist. The Bears outdrew their guets by a commanding margin, winning 16 of 21 draws in the game. Beyond that, Cal played short-handed for a larger portion of the game, drawing six yellow cards; and committed 23 turnovers to the Aggies’ 13.

Tickner had three of her five goals in the Bears’ 8-1 start during the first 17:04 of the game. Corsa then broke a 12-minute scoreless drought with an assist to Peterson in the 21st minute, then scored a goal of her own less than two minutes later. Farquharson scored a short-handed goal with three minutes remaining in the first half to bring the halftime score to 9-4.

Corsa and Hoffmire each accounted for one goal in a relatively defense-oriented second half, but Cal’s early margin was too much for UC Davis to overcome. The Aggies never closed the gap to less than six after the break.

The Aggies launch a three-game homestand on Wednesday against Vermont. Gametime is 7 p.m.

University Of Redlands Women’s Lacrosse Loses 22-14 To Colorado College After Strong Start To 2009 Season

The University of Redlands women’s lacrosse team had been on a roll to start the season. They managed to rack up goals and establish defense while rolling over Southern California redlandswomenslacrosseIntercollegiate Athletic Conference teams in their first two games of the season.

On Friday night, however, they faced a tougher test in Colorado College, who has received a Division III postseason bid seven out of the last eight years.

This game was physical and demanding, and while the Bulldogs managed to put up a fight, they ultimately would lose the game 22-14 and suffer their first defeat of the season. Although the result was not what the team was looking for, they managed to find a silver lining, highlighted by solid performances from around the field.

“I actually think they played better than previous games this season,” said head coach Suzette Soboti. “We had been trying to work on our intensity, and that got a lot better this game. They are a very quality team, and I thought we played them well.”

Despite falling to a 3-0 deficit to begin the game, the Bulldogs worked hard to not let it get out of hand, quickly erasing the fast start and scoring two unanswered goals. Colorado College would catch fire on offense as the half came to an end, going into the half with an 11-6 lead.

The start of the second half was all about the Bulldogs. Three quick goals brought the score to 12-9 early in the second half, injecting new life into the players and electrifying the crowd.

The onslaught of Colorado College’s talent, however, would prove to be too much as unanswered goals towards the end inflated the score to 22-14 when time ran out.

“It was a good game,” said senior midfielder Liza Gray. “They are a disciplined team. I can say we did play our hearts out and played them tough.”

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs received strong performances across the board, including some of their more inexperienced players.

“We had some great individual efforts by our players and I appreciated being able to see some of them gain confidence, especially considering how young our team is,” Soboti said. “Some of our freshmen had a breakout game. Ashley Finke had a really nice game, a really great game. Kali Wilque played well. Also, Rachel Haag did a great job for us on defense. I was really proud of how they fought to the end. Sometimes it’s tough against a team like this to do that.”

Finke finished with a game-high seven goals on 11 shots. Sophomore midfielder Christy Smith added four goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Lauren Matta, Gray and freshman attacker Kali Wilque rounded out the Bulldog scoring with one goal each.

A gutsy performance by sophomore goalkeeper Katrina Hostak produced seven saves, many of them in spectacular fashion.

The Bulldogs look to continue their SCIAC dominance at home against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11.

Stanford Women’s Lacrosse Defeats #20 William and Mary 18-9 In Best Effort Of The Season

“It was one of those days,” Schmidt said. “It was one of the first games where our team was in synch with each other. Everybody was on the same page.”

Claire Hubbard had five assists in Stanford's victory.

Claire Hubbard had five assists in Stanford's victory.

“The attackers were playing with so much confidence,” Bokker said. “A lot of that has to do with Claire Hubbard. If you draw the defenders, your teammates will make you look good, and Claire Hubbard made everyone look good today.”

Lauren Schmidt scored six goals and Claire Hubbard had five assists to tie Stanford single-game records in the Cardinal’s 18-9 nonconference women’s lacrosse victory over No. 20 William and Mary on Sunday at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

Schmidt, a junior who missed all of last season with a knee injury, tied a goal-scoring mark held by six others. And Hubbard, also a junior, matched the mark set by Kelsey Twist against UC Davis on Feb. 20, 2005.

In addition, Sarah Flynn scored five goals to help the Cardinal improve to 6-2 with its first victory over a ranked opponent in three tries this season. The goal totals from Schmidt and Flynn were the two highest by Stanford players in a game season.

William and Mary, which got three goals from Grace Golden and two from Julia Martin, a high school standout at nearby Menlo School, dropped to 2-3.

The performance, which comes as Stanford heads into a three-week break from competition because of Dead Week and finals, was the team’s best of the season, coach Amy Bokker said.

“The attackers were playing with so much confidence,” Bokker said. “A lot of that has to do with Claire Hubbard. If you draw the defenders, your teammates will make you look good, and Claire Hubbard made everyone look good today.”

Hubbard, who usually stations herself behind the opponent’s goal and runs the attack from there, was exceptional at finding the open teammate. She has 14 assists this year, one off her single-season high.

Schmidt, the team scoring leader with 27 points (17 goals, 10 assists), said the six goals were the most she has scored in a game at any level.

With the score deadlocked, 11-11, Walsh struck on a feed from Kyle Hollingsworth from behind the net for the game-winning goal.

Brown then took the advantage back, adding two goals to end the first quarter and one with 2:57 remaining in the second quarter. The Pioneers’ Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, British Columbia) netted the lone goal for Denver in the second quarter as he drilled an unassisted shot passed Burke with 2:43 remaining to cut Brown’s lead to 6-4.

Denver scored the first three goals of the second half to grab a 7-6 lead as Baxter, Murray and sophomore Jamie Lincoln (St. Catharines, Ontario) all scored. However, Brown answered right back with two goals of its own to take an 8-7 lead as Feinberg and Jake Hardy scored for the Bears.

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the fourth quarter as Baxter added his second of the game and junior Deke Jackson (Boise, Idaho) add his first. Down 9-8, the Bears secured the next two goals of the quarter as Brady Williams and Hollingworth both scored.

With 6:30 remaining in the game, Matthews tied the game at 10 all converting a shot from Gajic. However, the Bears answer just 28 seconds later as Jack Walsh scored on a pass from Feinberg.

The Pioneers tied the score a little under two minutes later as Murray scored an unassisted goal with 4:23 remaining, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears sealed the win with 1:23 on the clock on a Walsh goal, assisted by Hollingsworth.

Denver returns to action on Tuesday, March 17 as it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell at 2 p.m. (MT).
