Cal Berkeley Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Temple 8-6 In Philadelphia; Cal Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Sonoma State 13-12

Junior midfielder Alex Tickner scored three goals to lead California to an 8-6 victory over Temple on Sunday in the cold at Geasey Field. The Golden Bears evened their record at 3-3. The host Owls dropped to 0-2.
Cal Men’s Lacrosse  (#22) beat Sonoma State (#16) for the first time in 9 years. The final was 13 – 12 with Luke Langon scoring the winning goal with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Cal scored 3 goals in 1:29 seconds to erase a 12 – 10 Sonoma lead with 1:32 remaining.
Cal senior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson made seven saves in a complete-game effort, while counterpart Jessica Colucci made 13 saves in 60 minutes for the Owls.

“The game was a battle,” Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. “Our games with Temple usually are going to be a fight. Being on the road, we’re happy to get the win and that we’re going back to California on a positive note. The Temple goalie played real well. We were struggling to find a rhythm. I’m proud of DennaFaye Herald, Alex Tickner and Morgan Dyson for finding a way to get it done. It was not the prettiest win, but I’m happy to come away with the win on the road.

“It snowed last night about 10 inches, and they plowed the field this morning. It was pretty clear throughout the game but bearable. I’m happy with the girls winning on a chilly day.”

Chelsea Rosiek put Temple on the scoreboard first with a goal at 2:29. After a foul by the Owls’ Tracy Zimmer, Tickner converted an eight-meter shot at 4:30 to tie the game at 1-1. Rosiek then fouled Tickner, who tallied another eight-meter goal at 5:16 to give Cal a 2-1 lead.

Cal returns to Berkeley for a three-game home stand starting next Saturday, March 8, when the Bears host fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team UC Davis at 1 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Bears then host a pair of non conference games when they play William and Mary at 3 p.m. on March 11 and Vermont at noon on March 14.

championships game of the Harrow Face-Off Classic in front of a crowd of 1,098 fans at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

The Pioneers improve to 13-3 overall in Face-Off Classic history.

The Pioneers were led by senior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.), who had two goals on the day, and junior Charley Dickenson (Dallas, Texas), who tallied two assists.

“I am so happy with our performance this weekend,” said head coach Jamie Munro. “We played a solid game defensively against a very aggressive team. We had some great looks on goal and we controlled the ball. Our offense played smart and they did what we wanted them to do.”

For the Classic, Dickenson finished with a team-high nine points as he tallied one goal and eight assists during the two days, while freshman Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) tallied five goals and one assist for six points. Junior Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.) was named the Harrow Face-Off Classic MVP for his efforts on defense as he was responsible for five caused turnovers by both Towson and Sacred Heart.

“We got pushed around hard yesterday and I’m very happy with the way our team bounced back and continued to play mentally and physically tough,” Munro said.

Denver took a 1-0 lead into the break after one period of relatively scoreless play. The Pioneers opened the scoring with 3:57 left in the first period when Murray scored on an unassisted strike, his eighth goal of the year.

The Pioneers hit the road this week to take on Penn in Philadelphia on Friday Mar. 6.
