Northwestern continued its red-hot start to the 2009 season, blowing past Team Canada 21-5 in an exhibition game of the WomensLax.com Surfside Cup at Rancho Bernando High School.
Coming off a dominating 24-6 victory in the season opener against Denver Friday night, NU picked up right where they left off, netting the first 13 goals of the contest past Canada goalkeeper Kalley Greer, and held a commanding 14-2 halftime advantage. The Wildcats continued to have balanced scoring as 10 different `Cats tallied first half goals, led by two from Nielsen, Dowd and freshman Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon).
The two teams reverted to international rules in the second half, which allowed eight players in the attacking zone rather than seven, but the results were the same as NU outdueled Canada 7-3 in the half to cruise to the 21-5 win. Nielsen led all players with nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) while Bowen added four (3 goals, 1 assist) for the Wildcats.
Northwestern’s defense again came up big, as it held Canada to just four shots in the first half and 10 for the game, while also forcing 27 turnovers. Goalkeeper Morgan Lathrop (Briarcliff, N.Y./The Hackley School) allowed just four goals in 40 minutes of work while making a pair of big saves and causing two Canadian turnovers.
The Wildcat offensive charge continued to be one of the tops in the nation, firing 32 shots and landing 27 on net. Team Canada did hold a 16-12 advantage in draw controls, thanks in large part to six from former Maryland stand-out Dana Dobbie, who lead the Canadians with a pair of goals and an assist. Brooke McKenzie also added a goal and an assist in the loss.
NU now returns home to chilly Evanston to prepare for the rest of its challenging 2009 schedule. The Wildcats take some time off before traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face Duquesne on Feb. 17, followed up with a showdown against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Feb. 20.

“First, make sure this is the right school for you. If you feel that it is, we can then talk about lacrosse.”
“As hard as it may be, imagine suffering a career ending injury your freshman fall. Would you still want to be at the college that you’ve selected?”
DIII lacrosse, especially the NESCAC league, emphasizes the opportunity for athletes to have a certain balance between academics, social life and athletics. One major contribution to this is the absence of an official fall ball schedule.

As a high school lacrosse player with hopes of playing in college, one can be hyper-focused on the role of lacrosse and forget about other important aspects of choosing the right school. One of the best pieces of advice that I received from a mentor as I went through the college selection process was: “As hard as it may be, imagine suffering a career ending injury your freshman fall. Would you still want to be at the college that you’ve selected?” I stayed true to this advice, and as a result, found a place that fits me well with respect to academics, student culture, environment and community. Add to that a great lacrosse program and you’re going to have an unbelievable college experience.
There came a point in the process where I had to make a decision between playing Division I lacrosse and playing Division III lacrosse.
In no particular order, here are some of the reasons why I chose DIII, specifically Middlebury:
The Fall: DIII lacrosse, especially the NESCAC league, emphasizes the opportunity for athletes to have a certain balance between academics, social life and athletics. One major contribution to this is the absence of an official fall ball schedule. Rather, we rely on optional captains’ practices, lifting and cross training to prepare for the season. This makes the fall more low key than other programs and more self-directed. It also allows time for athletes to play other sports, focus on school work, or relax socially. By the time Feb. 15 rolls around (our official first practice in the NESCAC), the team is chomping at the bit and cannot wait to for the start of the season.
Multi-Sport Athletes: The optional fall ball at Middlebury also allows for athletes to compete in different sports across various seasons. We have several football/lacrosse, hockey/lacrosse, and soccer/lacrosse players at Middlebury. I even had a teammate, John Sales, who played on three varsity teams for four years: soccer, hockey and lacrosse. For an athlete with a passion for multiple sports and the desire to continue to play them throughout college, DIII could be a good choice.
Study Abroad: Both of my older brothers studied abroad in college and really enjoyed their experiences. Before I even applied to schools, I knew that I wanted to study abroad for a semester. At Middlebury we have about 75 percent of the juniors on our team study abroad each fall. It is a great opportunity to live in a foreign place, experience a new culture and broaden your horizons. I give a lot of credit to my coaches and my program that this is a supported and encouraged decision. I know one thing that is for certain: I will never regret or forget the six months that I spent in Sydney, Australia! If study abroad is something that you are considering, be sure to ask a future coach about it when visiting a school.
Level of Ability / Level of Competition:Find a school that matches your abilities and potential abilities. Aim high and give yourself room to grow and develop as a player; with continued work and effort you will improve throughout college. At the same time, be realistic about what you want to get out of your college lacrosse experience. On some teams, you can start from day one of your freshman year, others you will have to wait your turn and slowly work your way into the lineup, and in other programs you may never see consistent time. Have an honest discussion with a potential coach about your prospects as a member of a given team and consider your desired role.
When looking at Middlebury, then-coach Erin Quinn said to me, “First, make sure this is the right school for you. If you feel that it is, we can then talk about lacrosse.” Search for the school and the program that are the best fit for you in every area of your life and you are bound to have an unbelievable college experience. Good luck!

The No. 19 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team opened the 2009 season with a 24-6 loss to four-time defending national champions and No. 1 Northwestern in the Surfside Lacrosse Cup in San Diego on Friday night.
NU opened up the game by notching the first five goals, beginning with Spencer notching the first goal of the 2009 season less than a minute half into the contest. Denver would respond to cut the gap to 5-1, but that is as close as the Pioneers would get as the Wildcats would tally the next nine goals, with four of them coming off the stick of Bowen, to take a commanding 14-1 lead in the first half. Each team would register one additional goal with Nielsen registering her second of the night with less than a second remaining in the half to take a 15-2 advantage into the break. The second half was more of the same, as the `Cats would tally the first seven goals to push the advantage to 20 at 22-2 and cruised to the 24-6 victory as 13 different players found the back of the net for Northwestern.

Out of 106 MCLA Division I programs, Lacrosse Magazine, a US Lacrosse publication, places just 20 in their preseason rankings and this Spring, the Buffs are set to face nine of them, including two in the top five.
“We do our best to play all the teams in the top 10 every year,” says Galvin.

Some say to be the best you have to beat the best. This will be the theme of the Buffaloes’ season because the slate for 2009 is absolutely loaded.“We have a great schedule,” says Colorado Associate Head Coach, Peter McGraw. “This year, we get a CU will indeed compete with the best this season. Out of 106 MCLA Division I programs, Lacrosse Magazine, a US Lacrosse publication, places just 20 in their preseason rankings and this Spring, the Buffs are set to face nine of them, including two in the top five.
Colorado is set to face 13th ranked Texas A&M, 14th ranked Boston College and the 15th ranked Florida Gators in Boulder, then will start on an eight-game road gauntlet that includes match-ups with the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines, 11th ranked Georgia, 8th ranked Florida State, and a 4th ranked Brigham Young squad to begin conference play. The Buffs will come back to Colorado with #18 Lindenwood and #6 Colorado State to welcome them.
This might be considered a nightmare schedule to some, but if CU Head Coach John Galvin had his way, it would be even tougher.
“We do our best to play all the teams in the top 10 every year,” says Galvin.
That may be the objective, but this is about as challenging as it gets.
All of these tough match-ups make it important for CU to take a ‘one game at a time’ approach to the season, but the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown at Invesco Field @ Mile High, with rival CSU, still holds a special place on the schedule.
“The CSU game is always a big one for us because it is a rivalry game,” McGraw says. “Since the game is typically played at Invesco Field it is particularly special.”
It is impossible to predict where CU will stand come May, but one thing is certain. This group of Buffs will be an extremely battle-tested team, ready for anything come postseason.

The Gauchos will play San Diego State on Saturday and Arizona State on Sunday. Last season, the Gauchos defeated both teams, beating San Diego 18-4 at home and Arizona 14-3 in Tempe.
I feel confident that our team is getting exactly where we need to be at this point in the season. We’re ready to be a dominant force in the league, from these first two games on. And the best part? We look better every day that we play together.”

The Gauchos have another busy weekend ahead of them. On Saturday, the Gauchos open their season with the Surfside Cup at Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego.
Besides acting as the opener for the season, the cup also provides an opportunity for 10 of the nation’s top high school teams to observe the teams playing in the tournament. The Gauchos will play San Diego State on Saturday and Arizona State on Sunday. Last season, the Gauchos defeated both teams, beating San Diego 18-4 at home and Arizona 14-3 in Tempe. Head Coach Paul Ramsey is most concerned with SDSU for now, simply because they are the Gauchos’ first opponent.
“San Diego State, since they’re the next opponent we play, is the team that has me the most concerned,” Ramsey said. ”We’re on the ‘get excited to play the next game’ theme now.”
Senior captain and midfielder Katie Moran is also more concerned with SDSU.
“SDSU is always a fast team so they might be more of a challenge,” Moran said. “Plus, their team’s average height is about five feet tall, so we sometimes make a few extra fouls trying to reach down to hit the ball out of their sticks.”
Though the Gauchos handled the Aztecs with ease the last time they met, SDSU has two new coaches this year, both former All-Americans from Northwestern University, and that could provide something of a challenge. Ramsey, however, believes he knows what he can expect.
“I’ve seen [their style of play] quite a bit since the Northwestern NCAA championship games are on TV every year and that style of defense was one of the schemes we ran when I was coaching the defense at Hofstra,” Ramsey said. ”The key is to keep the ball moving ahead of the double team and get the ball over to the side of the field opposite the double team before attacking the goal. They’ll be marking the ball behind the goal if they’re doing everything so we need to be sure to not to assume it’s a safe area and be ready to attack from all four corners of the scoring area.”
Moran believes her team is ready for the season to begin, and that they have a chance to do something special.
“We’re really excited to see how we all play together in these first two matches,” Moran said. “I feel confident that our team is getting exactly where we need to be at this point in the season. We’re ready to be a dominant force in the league, from these first two games on. And the best part? We look better every day that we play together.”

Freshman attackman Parker Brown has had a great fall with the Bears, and could put Northern California lacrosse on the map.
“Players from emerging markets tend to have slightly lower lacrosse IQs,” Tiffany said. “But Parker has blown that out of the water. He’s really impressed us with his feel of the game.”

If there is one thing Brown has going for it in 2009, it’s that 95 percent of the Bears’ scoring from last season returns. The average height of their top six returning scorers is 5-foot-11, but don’t expect that to slow them down at all.
Tiffany emphasized the confidence and drive the team showed during the fall, referring to this season’s motto: Expect nothing. Earn everything.
“If we can build a stronger foundation than last year and if we can work harder in the preseason and come in stronger and in better shape, then we earn the right to dream bigger,” he said.
Thomas Muldoon, the leading scorer the past two seasons, is back along with converted attackman Jack Walsh, whom Tiffany calls the ignition switch and the pulse of the team. Kyle Hollingsworth and Feinberg round out the starting attack after each put up 21 goals last season, and power dodger Zach Caldwell returns at midfield.

LAXBUZZ: How did you come to create PrepChamps?
Dean Bundschu:
Almost every member of the PrepChamps team participated in some high school sport and several members played or coached at the collegiate level. Back in 2006 we began to look for a way to create a company the simplified the recruiting process. We actually thought of the idea when talking to a high school coach that mentioned how he was helping athletes by posting recruiting videos online.
At that point the light bulb went off and we began to think about how we could use technology to help high school athletes get recognized and recruited and college coaches find athletes that meet their programs needs. As we all know, social networking was being to really take off and at the same time, more and more college coaches were using technology to connect with athletes.
Thus we assembled a team of sports enthusiasts and technology experts to build a platform to help this dream become a reality. Recognizing the challenges that many high school student athletes face during the recruiting process, PrepChamps utilizes the power of the Internet to shift the focus toward “Social Recruiting”. PrepChamps is focused on providing high school student athletes with the tools they need to showcase their skills, enhance their exposure, and ultimately improve their chances of getting recognized and recruited.
LAXBUZZ: How many lacrosse student-athletes, boys and girls, would you say are members?
Dean Bundschu: We started by focusing heavily on football and basketball, but lacrosse is one area that we’ve definitely seen growth in. We have about 1000 lacrosse student-athletes on our site today. Some of our lacrosse student-athletes, such as Morgan Cain who committed to Seton Hill University, are getting recruited. (Total membership is over 66,000 members)
LAXBUZZ: How many college lacrosse coaches participate?
Dean Bundschu: We don’t force college coaches to specify which sport they coach so we can’t give you an exact number. But the feedback we get from coaches is that our site is useful in finding players and building their programs.
LAXBUZZ: Can you name a few Division 1, 2 and 3 schools?
Dean Bundschu: Lacrosse coaches from schools such as Lake Erie College, Florida Southern College, Trinity College, High Point University and McGill University have utilized our website.
LAXBUZZ: What are the 3 top things a lacrosse student-athlete and his or her family can do to best prepare for the recruiting process?
Dean Bundschu: Prepare all recruiting materials a college coach may need to evaluate the student-athlete for their program. (everything in your PrepChamps Profile)
Personal information (Name, mailing address, phone numbers, grade level, school attending, HC contact info, email address, jersey number, position, honors, etc.)
Educational information (GPA, SAT, ACT, if you have cleared the NCAA Clearing House, etc)
Athletic information (Game Highlight Video, stats, honors, etc)
Research
Sit down and discuss which programs best fit the student-athletes goals (Educationally, geographically, system of program, and once they take a visit…how they fit into the dynamic of the TEAM. Also, cover all levels)
Exposure
Do everything you can to get the student-athlete’s name out there!
Send their PrepChamps profile by email to every college that fits their criteria
Mail highlight DVDs to every college that fits their criteria
Attend as many college camps, tournaments, or showcases as possible!
