University Of Arizona Men’s Lacrosse 2009 Team Review And Schedule Summary

The University of Arizona men’s lacrosse team will open the 2009 season in exactly 50 days (Feb. 07) with UNLV in Tucson. This year’s 14-game schedule features nine Top 25 teams from 2008, 4 conference games, three conference champions, one NCAA DII team, and the defending national champions.

Top Returning Players

Corey Smith A Jr. – Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 10 assists for 34 points last season • Now has career totals of 63 goals and 18 assists for 81 points • All-WCLL as a freshman in 2007

Alex Beauchamp A Jr.

JJ Schmidt A Jr- Finished last season posting 4 goals and 1 assist in 4 games with five and one career totals

Curtis Fillmore M Sr. – Senior Captain. Enters fourth season as a regular in Arizona’s midfield rotation • Totaled 15 goals and 7 assists for 22 points last season and has career totals of 56 goals and 21 assists for 77 points. All-WCLL in 2007 & 2008

George Timbrell M Sr. – Outspoken senior leader.●2 goals 3 assists in 7 games in 2008● 21 goals 19 assists for his career.
Russell Mathias D Sr. – Senior Captain. Arizona’s lone returning starter on defense • Posted an assist last season and has two goals and three assists for his career.

Cooper Robbins G So. – Saw action in 10 games in goal last season and posted a 7.7 goals against average and a .542 save percentage. One of three HS All-Americans on the team.
Aaron Caton DM So. • Enters second season as Arizona’s top short stick defensive midfielder • Shutdown midfielder with ability to create in transition.

The Laxcats are 0-2 against the Hokies with the last meeting resulting in a 14-13 loss at the MCLA tournament in 2001•

BYU(4) • Mar. 14 • 4 pm • Murphey Stadium • Tucson, AZ
BYU defeated Arizona 16-1 in Provo last year • The Cougars lead the all-time series 4-2 and has won two the last two meetings.

Florida State(12) • Mar. 18 • 7 pm • Harkins Field • Tallahassee, FL
Arizona is 1-0 against FSU in the USLIA/MCLA era. Did not meet in 2008. The Seminoles feature a high-powered offense.

Florida(15) • Mar. 21 • 7pm • UVS Field • Gainesville, FL
Arizona leads the series 1-0. Will meet on the Laxcats’ Spring Break Trip to Florida.

UCSB (11)• March 25 • 5PM • Murphey Stadium • Tucson, AZ
This will be the 11th meeting between U of A and UCSB since 1999. Series is tied-5-5•

Santa Barbara has won two in a row, including a 8-3 match in California last year.

Simon Fraser(5) • April 12 • 1 pm • Murphey Stadium • Tucson, AZ
Third meeting between Simon Fraser (Vancouver,BC) and Arizona. The Laxcats lead the all time series 2-0.

Arizona State(6) • April 18 • 7 pm • Murphey Stadium • Tucson, AZ
The Sun Devils won last year’s game 16-6 in Tempe. Arizona leads the series 7-1 in the USLIA/MCLA era.

Arizona hires new offensive coordinator

Coach Greaney is a Michigan native and attended U of D Jesuit High School in Detroit. After high school, he attended Wheeling Jesuit University where he was a four year starter. Mark captained the team, set the school’s career goals record, and led Division II in goals and goals per game his senior year.

After accepting a position as a Local Development Officer for the English Lacrosse Association, Mark moved to Manchester, England. As an LDO, he coached and played for the Mellor Lacrosse Club. Mark was the head coach of the club’s U16 an U19 teams, as well as the head coach of the Cheadle\Marple 6th Form College, a joint high school team composed of two local schools. Without other high schools in the area, Cheadle\Marple joined a league of university teams and went on to achieve a one loss season and win the League Championship. As a player and offensive coordinator for Mellor in the Men’s Premiership League, Mark finished 2nd in the league for total points and helped Mellor reach the Northern Flags Tournament Finals.

Upon returning to the United States, Mark accepted an offensive coordinator and goalie coach position at the University of Arizona.

First meeting between Arizona and NDNU in men’s lacrosse • Teams had one common opponents in 2008 – Grand Canyon University • U of A posted a 1-0 record against GCU while NDNU was 2-0.

Michigan (1)• Feb. 21 • 4PM • Torrey Pines High School • San Diego, CA
Coach Morrison’s former team and reigning national champion • The Laxcats trail in the series 1-4 since 1999• Last year’s result was a 9-4 loss. Will meet on the home field of California high school power, Torrey Pines. – Junior Captain. Finished fourth on the team in scoring with 7 goals and 1 assists for 8 points as a midfielder in 12 games last season • Returns to attack position this year
